Auto Accident Step-By-Step Guide

1. Stop/Reduce The Danger

  • STOP IMMEDIATELY (It’s important to stop because failure to do so may be regarded as ‘Hit and Run.’)
  • Try to move your car out of traffic, move to the roadside if it is safe and possible to do so.
  • Make sure to turn OFF the ignition.
  • Make sure to turn ON hazard lights.
  • Watch for traffic after the accident.
  • Warn other cars with cones or flares and etc. (You could responsible and held liable for and damages.)

2. Call For Help

  • Call 911 (Please, be careful at times other driver may be dishonest or may act very violently.)

  • For any reason you Do NOT discuss your insurance policy limits.
  • Make sure you Do NOT argue or discuss the cause of the accident.

  • If possible give reasonable assistance to people injured in the accident.

3. Aide The Injured

  • Make sure you Do NOT give emergency medical assistance unless you are trained to do so.
  • Never assume people aren’t injured because they seem to be OK.
  • Never move a victim unless they are in danger.

4. Gathering Information

  • Make sure you take notes the state and license plate number of other cars involved.
  • If possible ask other people involved in the accident for their names and telephone numbers.
  • Try to ask any potential witnesses for their names and telephone numbers before they can leave the scene.

5. Afterwards

  • It very important that you go to the emergency room or to see your physician IMMEDIATELY if you have any pain or discomfort.
  • Even though if you feel normal after an accident you should consider seeing your doctor even if you feel ok. Depending on the accident some injuries can take weeks to develop.
  • If not seeing a doctor may make it difficult for you to collect benefits from insurance companies. See one as soon as possible.
  • Make sure you call your insurance company immediately.
  • If possible take pictures of any visible injuries or bruises.
  • Try to take as many pictures of any damages to your vehicle and/or other vehicles.
